These Californian white sage smudge sticks, made from salvia apiana, are a ceremonial bundle for shoppers interested in smudging rituals. Native to the coastal mountains of California, white sage, sometimes called sacred sage, is widely valued in ceremony and is used by many people for this purpose.
Each large bundle, around 18-20cm high, is wild harvested, meaning the sage is gathered from its natural habitat, and is wrapped in cotton string. Light the tip of the leaves, let it burn for 5 - 10 seconds, then gently blow on the embers. After use, extinguish the smoke in sand or a small dish of water. Use only under adult supervision and keep away from flammable materials.
