Pick a rug big enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on it. That usually means about 160 x 230 cm for a small lounge and 200 x 290 cm or larger for bigger rooms. Leave around 30–45 cm of bare floor between the rug and the walls.

Measure the width of the track or rod rather than the window, and choose curtains about 1.5 to 2 times that width for a full look. For length, measure from the top of the track to where you want the curtain to finish, usually about 1 cm above the floor.
